Crossing the Chasm
There is a gap between early adopters of a new technology and the mainstream market. Most new products die in it.
How to use it. What sold to early adopters will not sell to the mainstream. Early adopters tolerate rough edges for the promise. The mainstream wants whole products, reference customers, and a clear return on investment. Plan a different way of selling for each side of the chasm.
How it gets misused. Applied to all technology. The chasm exists for discontinuous innovations, which require users to change their behaviour. Incremental products do not face it. The first question is which kind your product is.
